E. J., a Jew, aged 51, stout and of apparently healthy constitution, wa3 admitted on the 29th December 1874 into the Mayo Native Hospital with a small scrotal tumour of three years' standing. The growth of the tumour has lately been rapid, but unattended with fever, the integument of tho penis and scrotum were equally involved in tho hypertrophic growth, and the penis was imbedded in it. The man seemed otherwise in good health. On the morning of the 29th December he was put under the influence of chloroform and the tumour was exsanguined, as much as possible, by means of an ordinary (Esmarch's) elastic bandage and a tubular elastic cord bound round the neck of the growth. The whole of the hypertrophied mass was then removed with little loss of blood ; about ten ligatures were used to secure the bleeding arteries. Both the testes were found enlarged. The tumour weighed after removal 31b 2oz. During the day of operation there was bleeding from four vessels, all of which were ligatured. 5 p.m.?Temperature 9S.-20 F.; complained of much pain; urine drawn off by catheter. A draught of Liq.
